The cause of death of a newborn who died in a hospital in France has been revealed, with local media reporting that the cause was a 6-year-old child throwing the baby on the floor.

Five-day-old baby Zayneb-Cassandra was found lying unconscious on the floor next to her bed with a traumatic brain injury at the Jeanne-de-Flandre Children's Hospital in the northern city of Lille, France, on Friday, July 11, and died from her injuries on Tuesday.

The Lille prosecutor's office confirmed on Friday that the baby died from trauma 'consisting of a fall to the floor.' A boy who was found standing on a chair next to her is believed to have pulled the toddler out of the crib and thrown her to the floor.

"A six-year-old child, a member of another family, was seen next to the bed while the baby was on the floor," prosecutors also confirmed.

Police have launched a criminal investigation into the horror that unfolded on the Rainbow ward last week, with witnesses claiming the six-year-old boy was left roaming the wards unsupervised.

Baby Zayneb, who was born six weeks premature, was kept alive by life support, but tragically died at the hands of the other baby.
