Germany vows to increase military role in NATO

NATO can count on Berlin to increase its contribution to Europe's defense as the Atlantic alliance faces a more uncertain future than 70 years ago when Germany became a member, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said on Monday.
Speaking at a ceremony at NATO headquarters in Brussels to mark the anniversary of membership, Steinmeier sought to reassure allies shaken by what he called epochal geopolitical changes, Reuters reports.
"Today, with Putin's war against Ukraine continuing in full force, and with the United States exerting severe pressure on its European allies, Germany is in a crucial position," he said, addressing the allies.
"We got the message, you can count on us... We will try to make Germany, both its army and its infrastructure, the backbone of conventional defense in Europe," he added.
