The spectacular robbery of the Louvre, photos of the crown of Empress

The Louvre Museum has announced plans to restore the crown of Empress Eugénie, which was abandoned by thieves during their escape after a sensational robbery at the Paris museum last year.

During the October robbery, the perpetrators made off with jewelry worth an estimated 88 million euros ($104 million), but threw away the 170-year-old crown as they fled.

According to the Louvre, the crown was found “severely deformed,” but was nevertheless “almost intact” and can be restored “without the need for reconstruction.” All of the emeralds remain in place, while only 10 diamonds are missing.

The crown was part of a pair commissioned by Napoleon III in 1855 for himself and his wife, although neither of them had an official coronation ceremony.

Museum officials said the crown still retains all 56 of its emeralds, while only 10 "very small" diamonds are missing from the original 1,354. Of the eight golden eagles around the crown's rim, only one is missing.

The museum will open a competitive tender process for the selection of a certified restorer, in accordance with the French Heritage Code.

The process will be supported by a new expert advisory committee, made up of museum representatives and jewelry specialists.

The Louvre will also invite one representative from each of the five historic jewelry houses — Mellerio, Chaumet, Cartier, Boucheron, and Van Cleef & Arpels — to join the advisory committee.

Robbery mastermind still on the run

The unprecedented robbery of jewels at the Louvre in October led to a deep review of security measures at the museum.

French authorities have arrested four suspected members of the group that carried out the robbery, but according to officials, the main organizer remains at large.

Eight pieces of the French crown jewels were stolen during the robbery, including an emerald necklace belonging to Marie-Louise, Napoleon Bonaparte's second wife, three pieces of a sapphire jewelry set, and another pearl-encrusted tiara of Empress Eugénie. None of the stolen jewels have been recovered to date.
