Greece on fire, powerful fires engulf the island of Chios

Firefighters battled through the night into this morning to control the flames that broke out on the island of Chios on Sunday afternoon. Strong winds were blowing in the area.

Helicopters began dropping water at dawn, while additional firefighting teams arrived by boat from the port of Piraeus.

In total, 190 firefighters are operating on the island, including 11 groups of infantry units, 38 vehicles and four aircraft.

The fire broke out around 11:40 in the Kofinas area and proved difficult to control due to very strong winds.

The Fire Department said three separate fires broke out, at hourly intervals, in Kofinas, Aghia Anna and Aghios Makarios Vrontadou.

Twelve communities were evacuated via the emergency number 112, which was sent at various intervals from noon.
