"Sentenced to 4 life sentences", who is the new head of Hamas, organizer of the attack that started the war in Gaza
The militant movement Hamas has chosen a new political leader to replace Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Tehran. He is Hamas military leader Yahya Sinwar, Hamas announced on its website.
In 1989, Sinwar was sentenced to four life terms for organizing and killing two Israeli soldiers and four Palestinians, whom he accused of collaborating with Israel.
After 22 years of service, Sinwar was released in a major prisoner exchange. In 2011, Israel exchanged 1,026 Palestinian prisoners for an Israeli soldier held hostage by Hamas.
Sinwar is considered the mastermind of the attack on Israel on October 7, when he attacked Israeli border military facilities, and then settlements and a music festival. Almost 1,200 people were killed and 250 hostages were taken.
The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court announced in May that he would seek the issuance of an arrest warrant for this new military-political leader of Hamas for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
