Earthquake in Ecuador, number of injured rises to 30, 800 buildings damaged

The 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck the northern coast of Ecuador left more than 30 people injured and 800 buildings damaged.

The worst damage was recorded in the port city of Esmeraldas.

The earthquake occurred at 6:44 am yesterday local time (1:44 pm in Italy) with a hypocenter just 2 km deep and an epicenter at sea 20 km from the mainland.

National oil company Petroecuador said it had "briefly suspended operations" at its Esmeraldas refinery and a nearby pipeline.

Daniel Noboa, the newly elected president of the South American nation, said he had urgently dispatched ministers to the area to help coordinate the construction of shelters and the distribution of humanitarian aid.
