A heat wave that swept through northern India has killed at least 52 people in New Delhi, the Times of India reported today, as the country faces record temperatures this summer.

At least 52 bodies were brought to hospitals in the past two days, according to the newspaper, most of them poor and destitute people living and working in the countryside.

India has counted more than 40,000 suspected cases of heatstroke this summer and at least 110 confirmed deaths between March 1 and June 18, when northwestern and eastern India recorded hot days.

"An extended summer should be ranked as a natural disaster," the newspaper noted in an editorial today, noting water shortages and record energy demand.

The Ministry of Health has instructed federal and state institutions to ensure immediate attention to patients, while hospitals have been instructed to make more beds available.

The weather service has predicted temperatures above normal for this month as well, where New Delhi experienced yesterday, Wednesday, the hottest night in over 50 years, with a minimum temperature of 35.2 degrees Celsius, according to the data of this service. Billions of people across Asia are facing extreme heat, a trend scientists say has been exacerbated by human-caused climate change.
