Iran, the truths and lies of war, BBC verifies footage of the armed conflict
The BBC has been working to separate the truth from the lies as images and videos of all kinds have flooded social media following six days of attacks in Iran, Israel and several Gulf states. Some of the widespread online hoaxes that its journalists have debunked include an image that purported to show a large explosion at an Iraqi airport, but which turned out to have been created with the help of AI.
Similarly, some Google Earth satellite images were manipulated to show damage to a US Navy base. Similarly, some fake social media profiles claimed to be of a senior Iranian cleric.
BBC News is also continuing to verify clips showing US fighter jets downed over Kuwait in an alleged "friendly fire" incident, footage of a fire burning at an oil refinery in Saudi Arabia after a drone attack, and videos of smoke rising over a French naval base in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi.
