Inflation and housing crisis/ Strike paralyzes Greece, flights and boat trips

Greece has been paralyzed today by a 24-hour nationwide general strike called by the General Confederation of the Private Sector (GSEE) and the State Administration (ADEDY).

The main demands of the unions are against high prices, inflation, the housing crisis, demanding, among other things, an increase in wages, the return of the 13th and 14th salary, and the collective labor contract.

In Athens, Thessaloniki and the country's major cities, rallies and protest marches will begin shortly.

In particular, the Private Sector Union, GSEE, which has called for mass participation in the strike, claims that the minimum wage should not be determined by government decisions, but by free collective agreements. It also demands a Collective Labor Agreement and energy policies to combat the high cost and housing crisis.

Meanwhile, the main demands of the Federation of State Administration, ADEDY, in addition to the price crisis and the high cost of housing rents, emphasize that a real increase in salaries in the Public Sector is now more than necessary and that the government should restore the 13th and 14th salary.

In the press release, the unions demand occupational health and safety measures, registration and publication of data on occupational accidents and occupational diseases, measures against harassment and sexual violence at work, a fair tax system, and benefits for employees and pensioners.

Public transport workers are also participating in today's strike. Ships will remain anchored in ports, and almost all flights from the country's airports have been canceled due to the Air Traffic Controllers' strike, except for those for extraordinary needs.

In addition to teachers and lecturers, students are also participating in the strike, protesting, among other things, the level of education, the uncertainty of school fees, and expressing their opposition to private universities. Without a doubt, at the center of today's rallies is the demand for justice regarding the train accident in the Tempi Valley two years ago.
