Humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Germany warns of sanctions against Israel
The German government is seriously considering the possibility of imposing sanctions on Israel due to the worsening humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that a decision on this matter could be made in the coming days, after receiving a full report from Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who is currently on an official visit to the Middle East to closely assess the situation.
“ The situation in Gaza is unacceptable, ” Merz told a news conference in Berlin. He added that Germany could not remain indifferent to the suffering of Palestinian civilians and that every country friendly to Israel had a responsibility to speak out when humanitarian standards were violated.
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul was even more direct in his statements, warning that if the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate and if there is no visible progress in efforts to help the civilian population, Israel risks facing international isolation. He stressed that the international community cannot turn a blind eye to the growing crisis.
To demonstrate its humanitarian commitment, Germany, together with the United Kingdom and France, took concrete action to help the population in need. The three countries organized an air bridge to send emergency aid to Gaza.
Two German military aircraft of the A400M type flew over the enclave and dropped 34 humanitarian aid packages, including food, drinking water, medicine and other supplies essential for the survival of civilians.
This move was welcomed by international humanitarian aid organizations, which have made ongoing calls for more support and safe access to the affected areas.
Germany's potential decision to impose sanctions on Israel constitutes a significant shift in Berlin's traditionally pro-Israel stance and could have far-reaching consequences for diplomatic relations between the two countries.
