Crisis in Kosovo, British and German ambassadors call for inter-party

The ambassadors of Great Britain and Germany to Kosovo have reacted after the second consecutive failure to constitute the new Parliament, calling on political parties to put aside their clashes and work together to form new institutions.

Through a Facebook response, British Ambassador Jonathan Hargreaves emphasized that citizens have the right to expect their leaders to put the country's interest above party interests.

"Kosovo urgently needs the formation of new institutions. More than two months have passed since the elections and citizens expect representation and action," he said.

A similar reaction was also had by the German ambassador to Pristina, Jorn Rohde, who, through the social network Bluesky, expressed concern about, as he called it, the "obstructive tactics" that are delaying the creation of institutions.

"Citizens deserve politicians who put Kosovo before party interests. Genuine cooperation is urgent to guarantee functional institutions and a stable government," Rohde wrote.

For the second time in a week, the session for the constitution of the Assembly has failed as a result of procedural disputes between the parties that secured seats in the February 9 elections.

Opposition parties PDK, LDK and AAK refuse to vote on the verification of MPs' mandates, demanding that members of the current government, who have been elected MPs, resign from their executive positions in advance.

Meanwhile, the acting Prime Minister and leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Albin Kurti, has stressed that the resignations are unnecessary, as the current government has been in office since March 23 and is only functioning in an interim capacity.

The crisis has raised concerns about the drag on the democratic process and institutional functioning in the country, while the interrupted session is expected to be resumed on Saturday, April 19. It is still unclear whether the parties will reach an agreement by then, or whether the crisis will deepen further.

International diplomats have increased calls for dialogue and political compromise, emphasizing that Kosovo needs functional institutions to face domestic and foreign policy challenges, including dialogue with Serbia and Euro-Atlantic integration.
