Red Cross calls on Russia, Ukraine: Stop targeting civilians! They are paying the price of war

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has said that civilians "continue to bear the brunt" of the war between Russia and Ukraine and urged both sides to avoid harming civilians.
"Civilians continue to bear the brunt of the fighting in the international armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine," said Ariane Bauer, the ICRC's regional director for Europe and Central Asia.
She said that “international humanitarian law (IHL) protects civilians and anyone not taking part in hostilities,” but “we continue to see them paying the price in this conflict.” “IHL rules are not optional,” she added.
"If the rules governing the conduct of hostilities are not respected, civilians will face even more devastating suffering and a political solution to stop the fighting will be more difficult to achieve."
She added: "The ongoing violence has led to further death and destruction, with more lives shattered and families torn apart. The prospect of peace remains elusive for civilians who continue to face the horrors of conflict."
