There is no end to the horror in Myanmar! The military junta continues bombing

Myanmar's military junta has continued airstrikes and artillery attacks even after the devastating earthquake that has killed thousands of people, according to armed groups and media.

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Southeast Asian country on March 28. Its epicenter was in one of the regions most affected by war since the junta overthrew Myanmar's elected leaders in 2021. Further earthquakes and aftershocks have continued.

The continuation of the bombings despite mounting public anger is a sign of how Myanmar's military rulers are struggling to hold on to power as they face the loss of more territory to anti-junta forces and ethnic militias.

The junta, which has close ties to Russia and China, has taken the rare step of turning to the international community for help after the earthquake. But it is unlikely to win public support through its response to the disaster.

DVB's data team identified at least 11 airstrikes and artillery strikes, causing at least 10 deaths between March 28 and 30. Some of the airstrikes were near the epicenter of the earthquake. The Karen National Union was among the armed groups that reported continued airstrikes.

“The airstrikes in the wake of the earthquake are outrageous, yet there are also brutal reports of the imposition of curfews that prevent people from carrying out search and rescue operations for loved ones after 10pm,” said human rights researcher Manny Maung in a commentary for The Interpreter, which is published by the Australia-based Lowy Institute.
