WHO loses communication with Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza

The head of WHO Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has stated this Sunday that the organization has lost communication with its contacts at the Al-Shifa hospital in the Gaza Strip.

"WHO has lost contact with its focal points at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, amid dire reports that the hospital is facing repeated attacks. There are reports that some of those who fled the hospital were shot, wounded or killed. The latest reports say that the hospital was surrounded by tanks," said Tedros in X.

Expressing concern for the safety of health workers and patients, including on life support for babies, he called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the enclave as "the only way to save lives and reduce the appalling levels of suffering". .

"WHO also calls for sustained, orderly, unhindered and safe medical evacuations of injured and critically ill patients. All hostages must receive proper medical care and be released unconditionally."

Israeli forces bombed Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza again on Saturday, this time targeting the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The attacks injured several members of staff on duty and put several babies at risk of death due to lack of oxygen after a power outage.

Palestinian Health Minister Mai al-Kaila had said that 39 babies in intensive care at Al-Shifa hospital are in a "life-threatening condition due to lack of oxygen".

She said 20 of the 35 hospitals in Gaza have been out of service since Oct. 7 due to Israeli attacks and fuel shortages.

Israel has launched relentless air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip - including hospitals, residences and houses of worship - since a cross-border attack by the Palestinian resistance group Hamas on October 7.

At least 11,078 Palestinians have been killed, including 4,506 children and 3,027 women. According to official figures, the Israeli death toll is around 1,200.
