WHO calls for more commitment in the fight against measles

The World Health Organization (WHO) called for greater efforts in the fight against measles, which has spread to 58 countries, including the United States where two children have died.

The United Nations agency, headquartered in Geneva, stressed that the measles vaccine is safe and effective.

"I want to remind people that measles is one of the most contagious viruses," said Kate O'Brien, director of the vaccines department at WHO.

During the press conference, she avoided criticism of US President Donald Trump and US Secretary of Health Robert Kennedy Jr., who is known as a vaccine skeptic.

Kennedy has been accused of not doing enough to combat the deadly measles outbreak, which has its epicenter in Texas, where hundreds of cases have been recorded. He only recently acknowledged the effectiveness of the measles vaccine.

"The United States is working to contain and stop this outbreak," O'Brien said.

However, she added that "for any country, as long as an outbreak continues, not enough can be done. We can only say that enough is being done when the outbreak is over," O'Brien stressed.

She said the disease is spreading due to declining vaccination rates, partly due to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The measles vaccine is an extremely safe and extremely effective vaccine," O'Brien said.
