UN: About 25 million people in Sudan face acute hunger

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) Sudan Emergency Coordinator, Samantha Chattaraj, said that approximately 25 million people in Sudan, equivalent to half the population, are facing acute hunger.
She stressed that WFP had made several efforts to help people who were left largely without assistance and reported that in March they reached 4 million people across Sudan, four times the number of people they helped the year before.
"About 25 million people across the country, half the population, are facing acute hunger. About 5 million children and breastfeeding mothers are acutely malnourished. Sudan is currently the only country in the world where famine has been confirmed," the UN coordinator said.
Chattaraj emphasized that they aim to reach 7 million people by mid-year and that they have prioritized 27 regions that are experiencing famine or are classified as at risk of famine.
