Avalanche in the European Alps, 17 dead in Austria, France and Switzerland

A tragic weekend has struck the Alps, where avalanches following heavy snowfall have claimed many lives. On Saturday alone, eight people lost their lives in the Austrian Alps, while the total death toll since last weekend has reached 17 in Austria, France and Switzerland.

According to Austrian police, three Czech skiers died in the Murtal region of Styria after being swept away by an avalanche and buried by snow. Rescue teams managed to locate them, but attempts to save them were unsuccessful.

Earlier in the same day, in the Pongau region near Salzburg, another avalanche hit a group of skiers off the piste, leaving four dead and one injured, according to ORF reports.

International media also reported that a woman, who had gone off-piste with her husband, was swept away by a second avalanche in the same area. Despite the rapid intervention of emergency services, she was unable to escape.

"Despite clear and repeated warnings, we had many avalanches today with fatal consequences," said Gerhard Kremzer, head of emergency services in the Pongau area.

The tragedy follows a string of previous days. On Tuesday, a 13-year-old from the Czech Republic died in Bad Gastein, in the Sportgastein resort, while off-piste. The day before, a 58-year-old skier was killed by an avalanche in Weerberg, Tyrol.

Meanwhile, in the French Alps, six people lost their lives over the past weekend in ski resorts, while in the Swiss Alps a German skier was killed and four others were injured by an avalanche.

Authorities are calling on athletes and tourists to heed avalanche warnings and avoid moving outside safe tracks, at a time when weather conditions remain unstable.
