After reconfirmation as chairman, Berisha convenes the DP leadership today, changes to the statute are ready, the "Basha" article remains on paper
The Democratic Party Presidency is expected to meet this Wednesday, where the focus will be on a series of statutory changes, drafted just a few days before the National Council meeting on May 30. According to media sources, the meeting at the blue headquarters is scheduled to start at 7:00 PM, while the draft of the changes is still being kept out of the public eye.
It is learned that the changes affecting the "Constitution" of the Democratic Party will be mainly of an organizational nature, including reforms in the leadership structures and quotas for the representation of certain categories in the lists for deputies or candidates for municipalities. However, one of the points that is not expected to be touched is precisely the so-called "Basha article", adopted years ago to force the party leader to resign after losing the elections.
Ironically, although this article remains in force, it seems to have lost its value at the moment when it had to be implemented by the current leadership itself. Former Prime Minister and leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, chose not to respect this statutory provision after losing to Prime Minister Edi Rama in the May 11 elections. A “party constitution” that works for others, but not necessarily for the one who bears its stamp and political direction.
Although there has been no shortage of criticism within the Democrats themselves about the way the primaries are functioning, this mechanism is not expected to be changed. Sources close to the Blue House indicate that the changes will be more organizational, while the essence of the statute will remain intact.
The final seal on these changes will be placed at the National Assembly on May 30, where delegates are expected to vote not only on the statutory amendments, but also on the new composition of the National Council.
The Presidency meeting comes just a few days after the Democratic Party held internal elections, where Sali Berisha was the only name on the ballot and was reconfirmed as party leader with 37,341 votes.
