Swiss parliament approves compensation for victims of deadly Crans Montana grass

The Swiss parliament today approved a one-off payment of 50,000 Swiss francs (55,000 euros) to the survivors and families of the victims of the deadly tragedy at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, where 41 people died and 115 were injured in a fire that broke out on New Year's Eve.

Compensation will be given to the families of the dead and the injured who were hospitalized. Among the victims were several foreign tourists, most of them young.

According to the prosecution and some testimonies, sparks from candles ignited the soundproofing material on the ceiling of the underground bar, where a crowd of people had gathered to celebrate the arrival of the new year.

Criminal investigation also against the mayor of Crans Montana

Earlier, the district of the Swiss canton of Valais announced that it had placed five current and former officials of the municipality of Crans-Montana under criminal investigation as part of the investigation into the deadly fire that killed 41 people and injured 115 others on New Year's Eve.

The Valais cantonal prosecutor's office did not provide further details, but a police source familiar with the case confirmed published information that the five people included the mayor of Crans-Montana, Nicolas Ferro.
