UK UN envoy: Iran must not have nuclear weapons

The UN Security Council is currently holding an emergency meeting following the US attacks on Iran. Barbara Woodward, the UK's representative to the UN, says Britain's top priority now must be to prevent the situation from escalating.

"We have long made clear that Iran must not have nuclear weapons and that their nuclear program represents a serious threat to international peace and security," she said.

"The UK did not participate in US or Israeli airstrikes," she added.

Woodward added that military action alone cannot bring a lasting solution to Iran's nuclear program, urging all parties to return to the negotiating table and find a diplomatic solution.
