Southern Spain floods, roads 'turn into rivers'

A powerful storm has hit the city of Jaén in the Andalusia region of southern Spain, causing flash flooding and scenes of panic among residents and tourists.

Streets were covered in raging streams of water, while pedestrians were knocked down and swept away by the strong currents that swept through the city center.

Footage posted on social media shows people calling for help as they struggle to stay afloat in the fast-flowing waters. In one video, a man is seen being pulled by the current along a city street, while another floats near vehicles stranded by the floodwaters.

The most alarming situation was recorded in the underground parking lot “Parking de la Constitución”, where the waters quickly penetrated, covering the vehicles and reaching almost to the ceiling of the building. The storm, accompanied by heavy hail, lasted only about 20 minutes, but left considerable consequences.

According to Spanish meteorological authorities, about 50 millimeters of rain fell in just one hour, while some areas recorded 32 millimeters of rain within 15 minutes. The intensity of the rainfall caused the drainage system to collapse, causing water to burst from manholes and underground canals.

Emergency services received more than 110 calls about flooding in garages and basements. Authorities urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and warned drivers to abandon their vehicles if the water level exceeded the wheel arches.

Despite the material damage and chaos caused, authorities confirmed that no casualties or serious injuries had been reported. Warnings for heavy rain and storms remain in place for several other provinces in southern Spain.
