"Finalization of vetting not the end of reform", ILD: Beginning of the most important phase of justice

The High Inspector of Justice, Artur Metani, was present this Wednesday (June 17), at the conference on the results of the vetting process in the country.
Metani stressed that the vetting process has had a significant impact on improving the justice system in Albania. According to Metani, the review bodies have done a successful job by verifying the integrity and professionalism of judges and prosecutors, as well as removing from the system those who did not meet the required standards. For this reason, the justice system is considered more reliable and of higher quality today compared to the period before the 2016 reform.
" The members of the re-evaluation bodies have done an extraordinary job by verifying and removing from the system the unhealthy part of it, based on concrete standards for assessing the integrity of judges and prosecutors. Today, the justice system, also because of this work, is significantly better than in 2016 ," he said.
However, Metani underlined that the completion of the vetting should not be seen as the end of the justice reform. On the contrary, this moment represents the beginning of a new phase, where the new justice institutions must take responsibility for maintaining and guaranteeing the standards of integrity, professionalism and accountability of magistrates.
" Now, the completion of the vetting process requires a careful assessment and reflection on the future, as it marks the transition from the phase of the functioning of the extraordinary vetting mechanism to a newer stage, where the responsibility for guaranteeing the integrity and professionalism of magistrates belongs entirely to the new justice institutions. This is why the completion of this process should not be seen as the finalization or achievement of the appropriate and successful results of the justice reform journey. This moment marks the beginning of the most important phase of justice reform, which is related to the institutionalization of integrity and accountability standards ," said Metani.
