A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the Peruvian capital and its surroundings on Sunday, killing one person and injuring 36 others, causing landslides and damage to health and school infrastructure, authorities said.

Police announced that a 36-year-old man lost his life when a wall collapsed on the vehicle he was traveling in, in the Independencia neighborhood of the Peruvian capital.

For its part, the national emergency operations center (COEN) reported 36 people injured in Lima, one of whom has been hospitalized.

"I appeal to citizens to remain calm," said President Dina Boluarte, adding that no tsunami warning had been issued.
