The US says it has struck three nuclear power plants – in Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan.
Fordow is hidden on a mountainside south of Tehran and is believed to be deeper underground than the Channel Tunnel connecting the United Kingdom and France.
The depth of the Fordow beneath the Earth's surface has made it difficult to reach with Israeli weapons. Only the US was considered to have a "bunker-busting" bomb powerful and large enough to destroy the Fordow.
This American bomb is called the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP). It weighs 13,000 kg (30,000 lb) and is capable of penetrating about 18 meters of concrete or 61 meters of soil before exploding, according to experts.
The Fordow tunnels are thought to be 80 to 90 meters below the surface, so the MOP is not guaranteed to be successful, but it is the only bomb that can come close to that.
American media reports say that MOP firearms were used in the attacks.
