Behind the scenes of a sensational visit/ Why did Trump descend on Beijing with 17 American CEOs?!
Trump just arrived in Beijing with 17 American CEOs; Tim Cook. Elon Musk. Larry Fink. Jamie Dimon.
THIS IS A NEGOTIATION. AND THE “GIFTS” ARE THE CEOS.
Let me explain to you what's really happening in Beijing right now. Because every headline is focused on the handshake. No one is explaining what's on the table under that stage.
When a head of state travels to a diplomatic summit — he takes with him diplomats, foreign policy advisers, national security officials.
Trump brought with him the CEO of Apple. The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX. The chairman of BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager with $10 trillion under management. The CEO of JP Morgan. The executives of Meta, Boeing, Cargill.
A total of 17 American CEOs.
The delegation includes Apple's Tim Cook, Tesla and SpaceX's Elon Musk, BlackRock's Larry Fink, as well as senior executives from JP Morgan, Meta, Boeing, Cargill and other major American corporations.
You don't bring the most powerful private sector leaders in the world to a foreign capital unless their very presence is the message.
Here's what China wants.
The Chinese economy is under serious pressure. Real GDP growth near 1% by the end of 2025. The real estate sector has collapsed. Consumer confidence at its lowest level in decades. Export prices falling. Youth unemployment remains high. The Chinese economic miracle is losing momentum.
What China needs to restart economic growth is exactly what is in that room in Beijing.
American investment capital. Apple's manufacturing partnerships. Tesla's technology. BlackRock's access to global capital markets. Boeing's airline contracts. JP Morgan's financial infrastructure.
China can't easily get these through its economy right now. But it can negotiate for them. And Trump just walked in the door bringing them all with him.
Here's what Trump needs.
Just one thing: For China to stop helping Iran. Because that's the military reality that most people don't understand.
Iran has missiles. Iran has drones. Iran has cruise missiles. But Iran doesn't know where to aim them without outside intelligence. Chinese ships in the Arabian Sea have been providing Iranian forces with real-time radar and satellite data.
Russian targeting intelligence has directed Iranian strikes. US intelligence services have confirmed that Chinese satellite imagery has been used by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to track US and allied positions. Iran's military effectiveness is not just Iranian. It is Chinese eyes and Russian brains that operate Iranian weapons.
Cut that "intelligence cable" and Iran fights blind.
Trump can't afford that nexus of threats. China has already faced 145% tariffs. China has faced technological restrictions. China has been sanctioned in multiple sectors.
None of this moved Beijing.
But Tim Cook walking into a room in Beijing and offering to expand Apple's manufacturing in China for billions of dollars — that moves Beijing. That's what 17 CEOs in a delegation really mean. "Gifts" are leverage.
Now here's the price China will ask.
Beijing is not charity. It is the most sophisticated transactional state in the world. Asian countries are openly concerned that Trump might trade security commitments to Taiwan in exchange for better economic terms with China.
Taiwan is watching this summit with more anxiety than any other country on earth. The Trump administration has been delaying a major arms sale to Taiwan for months ahead of this summit. China will be demanding investment, technological access, tariff cuts. And something for Taiwan.
He won't mention the word "Taiwan" out loud in the hall. There's no need. Both sides know exactly which "chip" has the most value.
There's another person in Beijing this week that no one is talking about. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in Beijing within 24 hours of Trump. Putin is not in the room. But his top diplomat is. And Lavrov knows everything that goes on in that room through channels that have operated for decades between Beijing and Moscow.
Putin's message to Trump throughout this war has been consistent: "Keep a light hand on Ukraine. We keep a light hand on Iran."
This offer was on the table months ago. Trump said no. He may be back in Beijing now.
With Xi Jinping in the room as a witness and guarantor.
This is going to get interesting.
