Senate rejects Democrats' resolution to withdraw US troops from Iran

The US Senate has narrowly rejected a resolution ordering the withdrawal of US forces involved in the war with Iran, after the Republican majority refused to limit President Donald Trump's military powers.

The text, which was similar to other resolutions introduced by Democrats in recent weeks, received 49 votes in favor (including three Republican senators) and 50 against.

For the first time since the start of the war, Republican Lisa Markowski voted in favor of withdrawing the military from the conflict with Iran.

"We thought we would get a clearer picture from the administration of where we are (in the war), but that's not what happened," she told Punchbowl News after the vote.

Under the U.S. Constitution, only Congress has the authority to declare war. Democrats are seeking to assert the supremacy of the legislative branch over the executive branch — represented by Trump — on the issue.

Trump ignored the deadline, which expired in early May, believing that a ceasefire with Iran had ended the war. However, Democrats dispute this argument and respond that US forces are still in the region and are involved in the blockade of Iranian ports.
