EU invests 11 million euros, Mirdita among municipalities selected for new

As one of the selected municipalities, Mirdita became part of the launch of the second phase of the "EU for Municipalities" program (EU4Municipalities), an initiative worth 11 million euros that aims to strengthen local governance and improve public services in Albania.

The program focuses on local economic development and the alignment of municipalities with European standards.

As part of Europe Week 2026, a regional activity was held in Mirdita Municipality to present this new phase of the program, attended by representatives of the European Union Delegation to Albania, central and local institutions, international partners, civil society organizations and citizens.

The Mayor of Mirdita, Albert Melyshi, described Europe Week as an important moment of reflection on Albania's European journey and partnership with the European Union. He emphasized that EU support has brought concrete improvements in infrastructure, public services and the approximation of local standards with European ones.

The Director of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Albania, Ritva Heikkinen, presented the new phase of the program, emphasizing that out of the total of 11 million euros, 6.5 million euros will be distributed in the form of grants to Albanian municipalities. She underlined that the program aims to increase the quality of public services, strengthen transparency and promote local economic development.

During the event, the main challenges of the Mirdita Municipality were highlighted, including immigration, economic development, infrastructure, and opportunities for youth, pointing out the need for close cooperation between local government, central institutions, and international partners.

In conclusion, the long-term contribution of international partners to the development of the area was also appreciated, including Austria, Japan, Italy, UNDP and other organizations, as well as their engagement in social and development projects in Mirdita.
