EU warns of fuel shortage for aircraft

European Union Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen said on Wednesday that there was currently no immediate threat to jet fuel supplies, but warned that a long-term shortage could not be ruled out.
Speaking to reporters, Jorgensen said the situation would depend on developments in the Iran war and tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the reaction of airlines. He noted that several operators, including the German group that owns Lufthansa, have canceled a large number of flights.
According to him, the European Union "has not yet reached" the point of a shortage of jet fuel, but the European Commission will start discussions with member states on how to deal with the situation.
The Iran war has significantly impacted energy markets, causing the price of jet fuel to double in some markets since late February.
"In reality, this is not an energy crisis. This is a fossil fuel crisis," Jorgensen declared.
