Palestinian President visits Damascus for first time in 16 years! Here's

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met today in Damascus with Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sarrah, on his first visit to Syria in 16 years.

According to a Syrian government source, this visit aims to discuss ways to strengthen Syrian-Palestinian relations and the "threats" facing both sides.

According to estimates by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), 560,000 Palestinians lived in Syria before the conflict erupted in the country in 2011. Today, their number is estimated at 438,000, of whom more than 40% were displaced during the war (230).

Abbas's last visit to Damascus was in 2009, during which he met with President Bashar al-Assad, who was overthrown in December 2024 by a coalition of Islamic rebel organizations led by Sarah.

Abbas and Sara first met in March on the sidelines of an Arab summit in Cairo.
