President Sheinbaum: Mexico has accepted nearly 40,000 deportees from the US

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum said her country has accepted almost 39,000 migrants deported from the US since Donald Trump returned to the White House in January.
This is a significant decrease compared to last year, when Mexico received about 52,000 migrants deported from the US during the February-April period, under the Joe Biden administration.
Even considering US deportations to South America's "Northern Triangle" of Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, which accounted for more than half of all deportations in March, it appears that Trump is still some way off his goal of removing one million people a year.
Public records show an increase in immigration enforcement under Trump, including a significant drop in illegal border crossings and an increase in immigrant arrests, but not necessarily in the number of deportations.
The White House said yesterday it is on track to meet Trump's annual goal, claiming that 139,000 people have been deported since his inauguration. But immigration experts say those figures do not match official data.
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which is required by Congress to release information on detentions and deportations every two weeks, has reported that about 57,000 people have been removed, less than half the figure claimed by the White House.
