The Trevi Fountain will no longer be free, the Rome municipality imposes a 2

The Trevi Fountain, one of Rome's most recognizable symbols and a must-see for any tourist, will no longer be completely free to visit up close.

Starting Monday, February 2, Italian authorities will apply a 2-euro ticket for access to the monument, in order to manage the large influx of visitors.

The decision comes at a time when Rome, like Venice and Florence, is facing record numbers of visitors, causing overcrowding, blocked roads and hardship for local residents.

The Trevi Fountain attracts tens of thousands of tourists every day for photos and the traditional coin toss, turning the surrounding area into an often chaotic space.

According to city authorities, the fee aims to improve the quality of the visit and safety.

"The aim is to improve the visitor experience and the use of our cultural heritage, while at the same time combating overcrowding," declared Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri.

A €2 ticket will be valid for access to the narrow walkway by the water, while the large square in front of the fountain will remain open to everyone for free. The new system will be implemented most days from 09:00 to 22:00, and on Mondays and Fridays from 11:30 to 22:00.

Tickets can be purchased in advance online or on site, by credit card only. Two separate lines will be created for visitors with pre-purchased tickets and for those purchasing on site, while entry will be controlled by attendants.

For more than a year, the number of visitors to the fountain has been limited to a maximum of 400 people at a time, however the city reports that up to 30,000 people visit it every day and up to 70,000 on peak days.

Similar measures have been taken in other Italian cities. Venice has introduced a fee for day tourists and is expected to reintroduce it this summer in an attempt to control overtourism.
