US removes Syria's HTS from list of terrorist organizations

The United States announced on Monday that it no longer considers the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) organization to be a terrorist organization.
HTS is a group that was once linked to Al-Qaeda – a terrorist organization – and in December overthrew the government in Syria.
"In consultation with the Attorney General and the Secretary of the Treasury, I am announcing the removal of the al-Nusrah Front, also known as Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, from the list of terrorist organizations," said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
An armed coalition, led by the leader of the HTS group, Ahmed al-Sharaa, overthrew the government of Bashar al-Assad, then president, ending the brutal regime that had lasted for half a century by the Assad family.
Sharaa has declared himself interim president, a decision that has been welcomed, but not with high levels of enthusiasm, in Washington, Europe, and elsewhere.
Washington's decision will take effect on Tuesday and follows US President Donald Trump's decision last week to lift US sanctions against Syria.
Trump lifted other sanctions against Syria in May, responding positively to a request from Saudi Arabia and Turkey to help the war-torn country reintegrate into the global economy.
The US has also removed Sharaan from the blacklist, after he rose to power.
HTS, also known as the al-Nusra Front, was once an affiliate of al-Qaeda in Syria, but severed ties with the jihadist group in 2016 and has attempted to create a different public image.
By 2017, HTS had control of a large part of northwest Syria and had established a civilian administration in the area, amid accusations of brutal abuses against those who oppose the regime.
In January, after the fall of the Assad regime, the new authorities announced the disbandment of all armed factions and all of them were integrated into state troops, as is the new police force./ REL
