US calls on China to persuade Iran not to close Strait of Hormuz

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on Chinese authorities on Sunday to urge Iran not to close the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's main oil shipping lanes.
Rubio's statement on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo" came after Iranian state broadcaster Press TV reported that Iran's parliament had approved a measure to close the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of global oil and gas supplies pass.
"I encourage the Chinese government in Beijing to call [Iran] on this issue, because they are heavily dependent on the Strait of Hormuz for their oil supplies," said Rubio, who also serves as national security adviser.
" If they do this, it will be another grave mistake. It is economic suicide for them. We have options to deal with it, but other countries should also look at it seriously. It would damage their economies much more than ours."
Rubio stressed that a decision to close the strait would constitute a massive escalation, which would require a response from the United States and other countries./ REL
