US launches massive attack against Houthi rebels in Yemen

US President Donald Trump ordered the US military to bomb Houthi targets in Yemen on Saturday over the militant group's attacks on ships in the Red Sea. Trump warned the Houthis that "hell will fall upon you" if they did not stop attacking American merchant ships and warships.
Trump also warned Iran, the main backer of the Houthis, to immediately stop supporting the militant group. He said that if Iran threatened the United States, “America will hold you fully accountable, and we will not be nice to you!”
The attacks came just days after the Houthis announced plans to resume attacks on Israeli ships passing through the Red Sea and Arabian Sea, the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Gulf of Aden, ending a period of calm that began in January with the Gaza ceasefire.
The Houthis carried out more than 100 attacks targeting shipping since November 2023, saying they were in solidarity with the Palestinians due to Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza.
During that period, the group sank two ships, seized another and killed at least four sailors in an offensive that disrupted global shipping, forcing companies to change direction, using longer and more expensive routes around South Africa.
"The Houthi attack on American ships will not be tolerated. We will use devastating force until we achieve our objective," Trump wrote. /AP
