US auctions seized Russian superyacht Amadea for $325 million

The United States is auctioning off the seized Russian luxury superyacht, the Amadea, for $325 million. This marks the first sale of a seized Russian superyacht since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The auction, which closes on September 10, comes as President Donald Trump is increasing pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war. The U.S. aim is to put pressure on Russian oligarchs, some of whom are believed to have close ties to Putin, in the hope that they will force him to stop the war.

The 106-meter-long yacht, built in 2017 by the German company Lürssen, is currently located in San Diego. It is an example of excessive luxury, including eight staterooms, a beauty salon, a spa, a gym, a swimming pool and a helipad.

The yacht's true ownership has been the subject of debate. Although the yacht is registered under a shell company in the Cayman Islands, US prosecutors claim that the real owner is Russian economist and former politician Suleiman Kerimov, who is sanctioned by the US. On the other hand, Eduard Khudainatov, a former head of state oil and gas company Rosneft, who is not sanctioned, claims to be the owner.

Khudainatov's legal representative, Adam Ford, has called the auction "inappropriate and premature," warning that potential buyers could face years of lawsuits.

To participate in the auction, bidders must pay a deposit of 10 million euros (approximately $11.6 million). The proceeds from the sale of the yacht will be used to benefit Ukraine, under an aid package approved in May 2024.
