Document/ After Tabaku's complaint, McAllister asks the European Commission for clarification on the situation of the opposition in Albania
Just a few days after the letter from Democratic Party MP Jorida Tabaku on the situation of the parliament and the integration process in Albania, the chairman of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, David McAllister, has officially requested clarification from the European Commission on the space for the opposition and the democratic functioning of institutions in the country.
In a letter to Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos, McAllister raises concerns conveyed by Tabaku about the exclusion of the opposition from the integration process, the lack of transparency, and the limitation of the Albanian parliament's controlling role.
The head of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee stresses that, according to the concerns raised by Tabaku, the opposition, civil society and the public are excluded from information on the negotiations and the process of Albania's membership in the European Union. He asks the European Commission for a clear assessment of the cooperation between the government and the opposition in Albania, as well as how the constitutional role of the opposition as an institution of democratic control can be guaranteed.
In his letter, McAllister says that “an integration process dominated solely by the executive and excluding the opposition risks undermining democratic standards and the very credibility of the European Union enlargement process.” He underlines that Albania, as a country considered a “frontrunner” in the integration process, must follow a process based on merit, institutional integrity and European democratic standards./tch
