Scientists: This is what causes the ice hole to grow

Scientists have discovered what is causing a hole the size of Switzerland to keep growing in Antarctica. For the first time, the hole called the Maud Rise polynya was seen in 1974 in the Weddell Sea of Antarctica, and since then it has appeared transiently in various sizes.
In 2016 and 2017 the hole grew larger, enabling scientists to take a closer look at the phenomenon and solve the 50-year-old mystery. Their findings were reported in the journal Science Advances. When summer turns to winter in Antarctica, the sea ice expands from about 3 million to 18 million square kilometers, covering 4 percent of the Earth's surface with ice.
Most of this sea ice grows at night and along with it the polynyas holes whose growth is influenced by strong winds. To investigate the mystery, scientists researched data from satellites and previous observations. They found that the Weddell Sea ocean current was stronger in 2016 and 2017 than in other years, which contributed to the hole's growth.
