Spain – Electricity supply restored to 99%

Electricity has been restored almost completely across Spain after a major outage, with around 99.16% of the electricity supply restored as of 06:00 (04:00 GMT), grid operator Red Eléctrica said on Tuesday.

"In neighboring Portugal, electricity had also been restored to most households," broadcaster RTP reported earlier today.

"Around 95% of the country's 6.5 million customers had returned to the network," RTP reported, citing network operator E-Redes.

Millions of people in Spain and Portugal were left in the dark on Monday as electricity was cut off, communication networks were disrupted, traffic lights stopped working and elevators were blocked.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, in a televised speech yesterday evening, promised that electricity would return to normal by today.

He did not mention the reason for the interruption, but stated that no possibility was being ruled out.
