Tragedy in Kocani/ North Macedonia in mourning for the 59 young people who lost their lives
At least 59 people were killed in the early hours of Sunday morning in the eastern North Macedonian town of Kocani when a fire broke out during a concert attended by hundreds of people at a nightclub. The North Macedonian government has declared seven days of mourning for the tragedy. So far, 35 victims have been identified, including 31 from Kocani and 4 from Shtip.
More than 155 people have been hospitalized, mostly in clinics in Skopje. Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said the facility where the tragedy occurred had a forged license, which was issued in March last year. He warned of criminal liability for all involved.
Macedonian Interior Minister Pance Toshkovski said that according to information received, the fire broke out as a result of pyrotechnic devices that were used for lighting effects at the concert. The Interior Ministry, in coordination with the Public Prosecutor's Office, said that there are 20 suspects, 15 of whom have been detained by the police.
