The State Department has begun laying off more than 1,300 people as part of a dramatic reorganization of the agency, international media report.
The layoffs will affect 1,107 civil service officials and 246 foreign service officials, according to an internal memo seen by CNN.
This comes as the State Department is implementing a drastic reorganization as part of the Trump administration's broader efforts to shrink the federal government.
Hundreds of offices are being eliminated or changed as a result of the changes being implemented on Friday.
Employees will receive layoff notices via email, the announcement said.
The shootings are happening while Secretary of State Marco Rubio is out of Washington, on a return flight from a trip abroad to Malaysia.
