Trump does not stop pressuring Zelensky: Leave Donbass at all costs!

Peace talks between the US and Ukraine have stalled over one key issue: how to force Ukraine to give up what the Kremlin failed to capture during the war, the entire Donbas region.

“On the issue of territory, the Americans are simple: Russia wants Ukraine to give up territories, and the Americans continue to think about how to make that happen,” a senior European official familiar with the negotiation process told POLITICO on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive issue.

"The Americans insist that Ukraine must leave Donbass... one way or another," the official added, A2 writes.

Ukraine has insisted that any peace deal must include a freeze on the current lines. Currently, about 30 percent of Donbass is still in Ukrainian hands.

"Overall, the most realistic option is to stay where we are. But the Russians are pressuring Kiev to give up territory," the European official said. And the US continues to push Ukraine to agree to the deal quickly, with President Donald Trump once again visibly frustrated with Kiev.

"Russia, I think, would prefer to have the whole country, when you think about it. But Russia, I believe, agrees with it [the US plan], but I'm not sure if Zelenskyy agrees with it. His people love it, but he hasn't read it," Trump said on the red carpet at the awards ceremony at the Kennedy Center in Washington on Sunday.

Zelenskyy has not commented on Trump's latest remarks, but he told Bloomberg that the US and Ukraine have not reached an agreement when it comes to eastern Ukraine. Kiev has tried to explain to the US that giving Vladimir Putin what he has failed to win in more than three years of war will only encourage him to take more. It also feels pressured by the speed with which the Americans want to act.

"Maybe Trump also wants this to happen quickly, so his team is forced to explain to him that they are not to blame for why this is not happening as quickly as he wanted it to happen," the European official said.

Last week, Putin said Russia would take Donbass anyway. However, Ukraine believes that giving up the remaining 30 percent of the Donetsk region, which includes the cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, with a total population of more than 100,000, would allow Putin to occupy the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv regions, Zelenskyy said earlier this year.

In August, Zelenskyy said that it would take Russia about four years to completely occupy Donbas.

"Therefore, it is important how America will behave, as a mediator or will it side with the Russians?" the European official said, adding that Ukraine is also waiting for clarity on what security guarantees the US is ready to provide.
