Crowds of worshipers gather around the Holy Kaaba in Mecca as the Muslim Hajj

Large crowds of Muslims dressed in white prayed today and performed the ritual of "tawaf", walking around the Kaaba of the Great Mosque of Mecca.

The Hajj, which begins on June 14, is one of the five main obligations of the Islamic religion, and according to the teachings must be performed at least once in a lifetime by Muslims who have the financial and physical means to do so.

Although temperatures are around 40 degrees in Saudi Arabia, even last year thousands of devotees did not hesitate to perform the ritual of their Lord despite the authorities reporting many cases of 'heat stress'.

"The temperatures expected for this year's Hajj are again high, one or two degrees above the normal of the cities of Mecca and Medina," said the head of the national meteorology center Ayman Ghulam at a press conference, according to the AFP network.

The Muslim visit to Mecca involves rituals that are performed over an average of four days in Mecca and its surroundings.

Last year more than 2 million foreign Muslims took part in the Hajj, according to official figures.

The Hajj is a significant financial and tourism boost for Saudi Arabia and a means of legitimization for the country's monarch, whose title also includes the designation "Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques", referring to Mecca and Medina.
