Turkey/ 76 people arrested for calling for May 1 demonstration

Turkish authorities arrested dozens of people suspected of calling for demonstrations in Taksim Square in Istanbul, as part of International Workers' Day, May 1st.
According to the state-run Anadolu agency, 76 people have been arrested so far, while 84 other suspects are being sought.
The detainees are accused of involvement in extreme left-wing organizations and of attempting to organize prohibited protests.
Following the Gezi Park protests in 2013, which began in Taksim Square and turned into a broad wave of discontent with the government, authorities have banned any opposition gatherings in this sensitive area.
In past years, May 1st has often been accompanied by clashes between protesters and police forces, with many arrests and violent clashes.
Taksim Square remains a symbolic point for unions and the opposition in Turkey.
They seek to commemorate the tragic event of May 1, 1977, when snipers opened fire on a mass gathering of nearly 500,000 people, killing many participants.
