Arrested by police, Erdogan's sworn opponent is declared an honorary citizen of the city of Paris

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu has been declared an honorary citizen of the city of Paris following the proposal of the mayor of the French capital, Anne Hidalgo.

The relevant decision was unanimously approved by the Paris City Council and aims to express the French capital's solidarity with Imamoglu, whom Hidalgo described as "unfairly prevented from representing his party" and "deprived of his fundamental rights."

He also stressed that Paris, as the "capital of human rights," should support a man who embodies democratic values.

A leading figure in the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), Imamoglu has long been seen as President Tayyip Erdogan's most formidable rival.

Despite his legal troubles, Imamoglu has vowed to continue fighting.
