Vance: US does not morally support Russia

The Trump administration and key figures in it are distancing themselves from the idea that the US supports Russia morally, following strong statements by former President Donald Trump who blamed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as one of those responsible for the war in Ukraine.

During a press conference with El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele, Trump criticized Zelensky, saying he helped "start" the conflict and is "always looking for missiles."

"You don't start a war against someone who is 20 times bigger than you and then hope they give you missiles," he said.

Trump listed the three culprits for the conflict: "Putin first, Biden who didn't know what he was doing second, and then Zelensky."

This rhetoric has irritated Zelensky, who told CBS News that Russian narratives are gaining ground in the United States.

"How is it possible to see our losses and suffering, understand what the Russians are doing, and still believe that they are not the aggressors?" he asked.

In light of these accusations, Vice President JD Vance, one of Zelensky's most vocal critics in the administration, stressed that while the US does not morally support the Russian invasion, it must understand the strategic red lines of both sides.

"It's absurd for Zelensky to tell the American government, which is keeping his entire military effort alive, that we are on the side of the Russians," Vance told Reuters.

Meanwhile, Trump has displayed a contradictory stance towards Putin, calling the Russian attack on Easter Sunday "terrible" and a "mistake", but at the same time has been soft on the Kremlin, seeking a peace agreement but without exerting strong pressure on Russia.

He concluded: "This whole war is a terrible thing. If I were president, it would never have started."
