Vatican reveals cause of Pope Francis' death

Pope Francis died of a stroke and heart failure, the Vatican has announced.

The stroke led to a coma and irreversible heart failure, the death certificate, released by the Vatican, said.

The report comes about 12 hours after the death of the Pope, who was suffering from a chronic lung disease, was announced.

Health problems plagued him during the last years of his life, and he was admitted to the Gemelli Hospital on February 14 for a respiratory crisis that led to double pneumonia.

This led to a 38-day stay in hospital. However, he appeared in public on Easter Sunday, the day before his death, to bless thousands of people in St. Peter's Square.
