Who doesn't love lounging on white sandy beaches with a cocktail in hand while gazing out at crystal clear oceans? A tropical getaway to a remote island is a dream trip for many curious and adventurous tourists, but North Sentinel Island is sure to change your mind.

This island in the Indian Ocean does not allow tourists to enter. Despite the fact that its nature remains untouched by the outside world, it is certainly not worth the risk of the trip. North Sentinel Island, one of the 572 archipelagos that make up the Andamans, is home to about 500 locals.

A protected area of India, it is located on the Bay of Bengal, with Myanmar and Thailand the nearest mainland countries. The island is ruled by a voluntarily isolated tribe known to brutally kill anyone who enters their territory.

That is why there is a five nautical mile (9.3 km) exclusion zone surrounding it. The Sentinelese – dubbed the world's most dangerous tribe – are thought to have inhabited the area for around 60,000 years. But some adventurers have let their curiosity get the better of them. A small part has crossed the exclusion zone over the years but with fatal consequences.

The most recent person to make an illegal trip to the island was American John Allen Chau in 2018. Sent by a missionary based in Missouri, he planned to live among and preach Christianity to the Sentinelese. Their language is not known by anyone outside the tribe, so it is highly unlikely that they understood English. Despite this, 26-year-old John visited the island several times.

He had visited Port Blair, the Andaman capital, on a tourist visa before paying the fisherman around $400 (£301) to be smuggled to North Sentinel. John offered the tribe gifts and attempted to communicate with them, but withdrew after receiving a hostile response. Another visit saw him shot by a boy with a metal-headed arrow that pierced the Bible he was holding.

John's last visit was on November 17 – from which he never returned. The fisherman claims that they saw the tribe dragging and burying his body on the shore of the island. Despite efforts by Indian authorities, John's body was never found. Seven people, including the fisherman who helped him get onto the island, were arrested.
