Ursula von der Leyen, after the end of the European Council, said that Cyprus has been affected more than any other member state by the war and praised President Nikos Christodoulides for his management of the situation. She also stressed that the EU will find a way to provide Ukraine with the 90 billion euro loan, despite Hungary's opposition.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen underlined Cyprus' critical position in the Middle East conflict, saying that the security of Cyprus is now the security of the entire European Union. Cyprus has been directly affected by the conflicts and President Nikos Christodoulides' response sent a message of unity and cooperation with the EU.

“I congratulate President Christodoulides for his excellent management of the situation and for continuing his presidency with determination,” von der Leyen said. She also said that “Cyprus is safe and normality prevails in the region,” confirming her personal visit to Cyprus in April for the informal European Council.

The President of the European Commission has reaffirmed the EU's commitment to disburse the agreed €90 billion loan to Ukraine, despite objections from Hungary.

"We will do this one way or another," von der Leyen said, referring to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's insistence on retaining his veto.

During the summit, EU leaders condemned Hungary's "unacceptable" stance. European Council President Antonio Costa stressed that the agreement must be respected and that "no one can blackmail the European Council."

At the same time, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called Hungary's rejection "an act of great dishonesty" that "will leave deep wounds" and damage the EU's position in the world.
