In their meeting at the Vatican at the funeral of Pope Francis, Volodymyr Zelensky urged Donald Trump to take a tougher stance against Russia.
Senior American officials revealed that the Ukrainian leader was able to influence Trump, who appeared to be getting closer to Vladimir Putin.
The two presidents agreed to hold a brief, 15-minute face-to-face meeting.
The conversation took place inside St. Peter's Basilica, where the two leaders discussed the Russia-Ukraine war and America's efforts to end it.
Two sources told the American media outlet Axios that Zelensky had asked President Trump to take a tougher stance on Putin.
The Ukrainian leader is also said to have backed away from his demands for an unconditional ceasefire, which was proposed by the US weeks ago but rejected by the Kremlin.
Zelensky told Trump he was ready to make concessions in an effort to bring peace to his war-torn nation, but demanded strong security guarantees in return.
