A large fire broke out on Tuesday, April 22, in the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area, in Ocean County, New Jersey, causing the immediate evacuation of about 3,000 residents and destroying thousands of acres of forest land.

The fire spread rapidly due to dry weather conditions and strong winds, burning more than 8,500 hectares and threatening over 1,300 buildings.

Authorities ordered mandatory evacuations in three areas of Ocean and Lacey counties, while opening shelters at local high schools to accommodate displaced residents. At the same time, power outages were reported in some areas after power companies cut power to about 25,000 customers for the safety of firefighters.

The fire broke out during a period of high fire danger, with the region experiencing drought conditions. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.

Firefighters continue efforts to extinguish the fire, while authorities are on standby to protect residents and their properties.
